Itris Automation Square announces having recently raised $1.4 Million in Series A funding. The company will use the funds to consolidate its technology assets and accelerate the sales of its products.Learn more >> Contact
Grenoble – France, September 12th, 2013 – Itris Automation Square (IAS), a software engineering company that provides development tools for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), announces having recently raised $1.4 Million in Series A funding.
The software engineering company Itris Automation Square announced it has closed a $1.4 million Series A funding round led by Rhône Alpes Création, with contributions from Siparex Proximité Innovation, ExpansInvest, Eurekap !, and previous seed-round investors including management and business angels. The company will use the funds to consolidate its technology assets and accelerate the sales of its products.
Itris Automation Square targets the programmable logic controllers market. PLCs are the equivalent to industrial computers, used to control production or processes. PLCs now need to respond to increasingly complex features. This complexity, coupled with the emergence of security and cyber-security issues, leads to a need for industrialization in developing programs that operate these PLCs.
Itris Automation Square offers 2 main tools that are developed by a team of experts with dual skills in automation and computer science, providing a real answer to industry’s needs. The first software tool, called PLC Checker, automatically analyzes PLC programs and comprehensively verifies their compliance with generic rules, or rules specific to the client’s needs. The second software is called PLC Converter: it allows the automatic translation of PLC programs from old to new generations of PLCs, including between different PLC brands.
“This funding allows us to expand our market access and to build on our first client references a sustainable growth, both in France and abroad. Being supported in our development by prominent investors also validates our achievements, and the huge opportunity we see for a new generation of PLC programs development tools,” said Eric PIERREL, CEO of Itris Automation Square.
“The experience and complementarity of Itris Automation Square’s team, both technically and commercially, is a competitive advantage to provide innovative technology in a more traditional market. With the support of business angels, the company was able to finalize the development of its own technological bricks, allowing it to shift successfully from a company that provides services to a software editor,” said Gwenaël HAMON, Principal at Rhône-Alpes Création.
The software tools developed by Itris Automation Square have already convinced internationally reputed companies such as Safran, Schneider Electric, Areva, EDF or PSA Peugeot Citroën.
After three years of product development, the company is now ready for the next stage of its commercial deployment with an ambitious and global market access. 2012 was marked by a strong sales and marketing investment that helped lay the foundations for export and build relationships with the ecosystem (value-added resellers, technical partners, professional organizations, certification bodies, end-users).
The recent funding is therefore directly linked to the strategy set by the management. It will allow the company to complete its latest technological developments while accelerating the sales of its solutions, both in France and in Europe.

Itris Automation Square signed a deal with a major defense company to offer solutions for the emulation of PLC programs on a PC.Learn more >> Contact
Grenoble, France, November 25th 2009 – Itris Automation Square, an independent software vendor offering highly innovative solutions for the development of PLC programs, announced today that it signed a deal with a major defense company. Itris Automation Square will offer solutions for the emulation of PLC programs on a PC thus facilitating the design and maintenance of training simulators.
Itris Automation Square’s new offering, named PLC Virtualizer, will translate PLC programs to C language, allowing its customer to avoid using dedicated PLC hardware in its training simulators and thus providing significant savings. Also, being both automatic and systematic, the translation ensures a permanent consistency between the real system and the simulator, saving many hours of redevelopment while simulations always take into account the latest evolutions of the system.
Outside of the defense industry, many other industrial sectors require complex multi PLC simulations to tame the sophistication of the architecture of large systems. Beyond training, virtual simulation that abstracts the physical execution environment allows significant design and engineering savings. Tests can be run earlier in the design process, before the actual hardware is available, thus reducing the very costly validation phase on the real system. Finally, simulation approaches are common to both embedded and PLC controlled systems, helping nowadays convergence of both worlds.
“With PLC Virtualizer, we keep reinforcing our technological offering while accompanying our customers in their innovative usages of that technology and reaffirming our capability to tackle complex technical challenges,” explains Daniel Pilaud, CEO of Itris Automation Square. “Also, we see this contract as a sign of trust; our sales and technical teams have been building a real partner relationship with our customer to better understand its needs and offer optimal solutions.”
Itris Automation Square announced today the launch of PLC DocGen, a tool that automatically generates a precise and synthetic documentation, thus helping reverse engineering.Learn more >> Contact
Grenoble, France, August 27th 2009 – Itris Automation Square, an independent software vendor offering highly innovative solutions for the development of PLC programs, announced today the launch of PLC DocGen. PLC DocGen automatically generates a precise and synthetic documentation, thus helping reverse engineering be it for new developments based on legacy code or for maintenance and modernization.
During its whole lifecycle, a typical PLC program will be read and modified by many contributors: development and commissioning teams, maintenance and modernization technicians and engineers, project managers. Unfortunately, the code is often the only available documentation and working on an undocumented program is always a major loss of time. Also, manually writing documentation is tiresome and error-prone. The need for a perfectly consistent format and the tediousness of the task argue for an automated tool based approach; that’s what PLC DocGen offers.
Indeed, PLC DocGen automatically generates a dataflow oriented view of a PLC program (from inputs towards outputs) represented by equations and flowcharts, thus abstracting the actual sequential execution of the program. This view is a perfect intermediate formalism between specifications and the code itself. It is independent from the programming style and the type (and vendor) of PLC hardware on which the program runs. Also, PLC DocGen may use as a parameter any kind of documentation template (title blocks, symbols…) thus ensuring a consistent formatting for all documents.
“Launching PLC DocGen allows us to address another need of automation engineers. PLC DocGen complements our existing product portfolio already consisting in automatic PLC programs conversion and coding rules verification tools. Thus, we keep leveraging our innovative software engineering technologies to bring our customers new solutions that help them tame the growing complexity of PLC programs,” explains Eric Pierrel, Marketing Director of Itris Automation Square.
PLC DocGen is available for programs written for April/Orphée, SMC, TSX Série7 and Unity (Premium, Quantum and M340) PLCs offered by Schneider Electric and for Step7 and Step5 PLCs offered by Siemens. It is sold by Itris Automation Square as a service with accompanying training and consulting offerings.
Itris Automation Square announced today that it signed a deal with a major PLC vendor to deploy its PLC Converter automatic program translation product within the global consulting teams of its customer.Learn more >> Contact
Grenoble, France, March 26th 2009 – Itris Automation Square, an independent software vendor offering highly innovative solutions for the development of PLC programs, announced today that it signed a deal with a major PLC vendor to deploy its PLC Converter automatic program translation product within the global consulting teams of its customer.
Thanks to the agreement, which is valid for the years 2009, 2010 and 2011, the consulting teams of Itris Automation Square customer will benefit from significant productivity gains when modernizing PLC controlled facilities. PLC Converter will more particularly help the PLC vendor to maintain its installed base and upgrade it to more recent versions of its products.
The main reason for the choice of PLC Converter is the highly rigorous process it uses to translate PLC programs, thus allowing a very high quality level. Indeed, the translation is fully automatic and based on advanced semantic analysis techniques that guarantee the iso-functionality of the program parts that are translated during the modernization operation.
“We see this deal as a significant proof of trust which is the result of our permanent quest for customer satisfaction and of a careful focus on customer needs,” explains Philippe Treillé, Sales Director of Itris Automation Square. “The contract also acknowledges the relevance of our Software-as-a-Service business model that brings a lot of flexibility to our customers. Indeed, it’s a great way to turn fixed costs – software licenses – into variable costs as the actual costs directly reflect the usage of our products and are thus fully consistent with the level of business done by our customers. This business model is a key asset in the current tough economic situation.”
PLC Checker now supports PLC programs written with the RSLogix development environment offered by Rockwell Automation.Learn more >> Contact
Grenoble, France, December 2nd 2008 – Itris Automation Square, an independent software vendor offering highly innovative solutions for the development of PLC programs, announced today that its flagship product for the automatic coding rules verification now supports PLC programs written with the RSLogix development environment offered by Rockwell Automation.
PLC Checker improves the readability, the maintainability and the robustness of PLC programs thanks to its unique capacity to automatically verify the compliance with coding rules, naming and structure conventions and programming standards. It replaces human proofreading of the programs, which takes a very long time and thus allows industrial users of PLCs to adopt systematically coding standards and guarantee the consistency of their programs.
PLC Checker is typically used in contractual relationships, in which it is a key factor to determine quality goals. By using PLC Checker, contractors demonstrate the quality of their programs with the most innovative solution on the market. Industrial users of PLCs benefit from programs that are easier to read and to maintain and can use PLC Checker results as a formal, repeatable and exhaustive acceptance criteria.
“By adding support for Rockwell PLCs to already available versions for Schneider-Electric and Siemens, we aim at supporting better our customers who wanted to be able to apply consistent coding rules on wider ranges of PLCs. The support for Rockwell PLCs also opens new markets for Itris Automation Square, especially in countries or industrial sectors in which Rockwell is the main vendor of PLCs,” explains Daniel Pilaud, CEO of Itris Automation Square.“The release of PLC Checker for Rockwell is also a new demonstration of Itris Automation Square many years experience applying computer science advanced technologies to the development of complex automation systems. This mix of skills is recognized as a strong differentiator of our offering by our customers.”
Launched today for programs written with Rockwell Automation RSLogix, PLC Checker is also available for Schneider Electric Unity Pro and PL7 Pro and for Siemens SIMATIC STEP 7. Itris Automation Square announced today that PSA Peugeot Citroen has decided to use the PLC Checker coding rules verification tool systematically.Learn more >> Contact
Grenoble, France, September 9th 2008 – Itris Automation Square, an independent software vendor offering highly innovative solutions for the development of PLC programs, announced today that PSA Peugeot Citroën has decided to use the PLC Checker coding rules verification tool systematically. Usage of PLC Checker is also mandatory for PSA Peugeot Citroën suppliers.
Thousands of PLCs control the assembly lines of PSA Peugeot Citroën. To ensure the quality of programs that operate those PLCs, PSA Peugeot Citroën has decided to put in place coding rules. Such rules allow a better readability and consistency and a more efficient maintenance. Assembly line interruptions are less frequent and shorter, while code modifications are easier, thus generating huge savings. Respecting those rules is also mandatory for PSA Peugeot Citroën suppliers: it is a criterion during acceptance testing.
Such a quality approach is allowed by the deployment of PLC Checker, a tool that checks automatically and consistently the compliance with the rules defined by PSA Peugeot Citroën. The acceptance tests are both less costly and more thorough. Formalizing the rules is easier so the suppliers have a clear vision of the goal they have to reach. At last, having developers use PLC Checker during the coding process allows an immediate self correction and a quick learning of the rules.
“We have recently updated our automation design rules: this is the ACTIF project (Guide to the technical design of manufacturing facilities – in French: Aide à la Conception Technique des Installations de Fabrication). The goals of ACTIF are: quicker projects, a better quality of the diagnostic and the troubleshooting, faster fixing and easier modification of the facilities. The PLC program is the brain that controls everything, it must be well structured and our rules must be followed by our suppliers, especially the rules that enable a thorough and reliable diagnostic on the Human Machine Interfaces. Up to now, quality wasn’t always there and our control methods were cumbersome. PLC Checker smoothens our control methods and also gives suppliers a sense of responsibility” explains Laurent Mauguy, Automation Standards Manager at PSA Peugeot Citroën.
“Indeed, adds Patrick Sudan, Automation Manager at PSA Peugeot Citroën, everything that allows better quality and productivity, for us and our suppliers, is key to our offering of reliable and efficient automation technologies. These technologies enable competitive costs and shorter delivery terms.”
“Developing programs for the car industry is more and more complex because of the constantly increasing performance and quality requirements. To control this complexity, PSA Peugeot Citroën has put in place coding rules. It is a very interesting initiative and it guarantees better control of the maintenance costs. However this initiative leads to a need for tools that can ensure a thorough and systematic verification of the compliance with the rules. Such tools are essential as the financial consequences of a lack of quality may be extremely heavy due to a long and costly maintenance of the programs,” explains Daniel Pilaud, CEO of Itris Automation Square. “The recent choice of PSA Peugeot Citroën to systematically use PLC Checker proves that automatic verification tools are indispensable. We are very pleased to support PSA Peugeot Citroën in its quality improvement process.”
Beyond coding rules specific to a given industrial such as PSA Peugeot Citroën, PLC Checker can also check generic coding rules, valid for all industries. It can analyze programs written for multiple PLCs, including the one offered by Schneider Electric and Siemens. It is sold through a Software as a Service (SaaS) model.

Itris Automation Square announced today that it has released PLC Metrics, a tool that automatically analyses PLC programs and compute metrics about them.Learn more >> Contact
Grenoble, France, April 16th 2008 – Itris Automation Square, an independent software vendor offering highly innovative solutions for the development of PLC programs, announced today the launch of PLC Metrics. This hosted tool, available on Itris Automation Square extranet, allows automation engineers and technicians to automatically analyze their PLC programs for free.
PLC Metrics automatically analyses a PLC program and computes metrics such as the number of rungs, I/Os and steps. It also determines its main characteristics: the hardware configuration, the presence of grafcet (and its steps and macros) or the presence of specific cards (communication, axis…). Results of the analysis are computed online in a matter of seconds.
PLC Metrics provides automation engineers with valuable information to help them anticipate and diagnose problems. PLC Metrics is a very good decision making tool before a conversion: based on the results of the analysis, automation engineers are able to predict the cost of the conversion and decide whether they should rewrite the program. Finally, PLC Metrics is also a very good way to re-document a program when the original documentation is no longer available.
“By offering a free access to PLC Metrics, Itris Automation Square is renewing its commitment to allow an easy access to the best computer science techniques for Programmable Logic Controllers. This commitment is at the heart of our mission and we are very happy today to help the community of automation engineers,” explains Daniel Pilaud, CEO of Itris Automation Square.
PLC Metrics is available for programs written for Orphée, PL7-3, PL7-Pro and SMC PLCs, offered by Schneider Electric. It will soon be also available for Siemens and Rockwell Automation PLCs. PLC Metrics can be used on Itris Automation Square website.
